To get cited by AI answer engines, your page must first be retrieved for the question, then be the clearest and most trustworthy source among those retrieved. In practice that means allowing AI search crawlers, answering the exact question in the first 40 to 60 words, covering the subtopics the cited pages cover, adding structured data and specific facts, and earning mentions on the sites AI already trusts.
The citation funnel: missing, retrieved, cited
Every page sits at one of three stages for a given question:
- Missing: the page is not among the results the AI reads.
- Retrieved: the AI reads the page but quotes other sources.
- Cited: the page is quoted and linked in the answer.
Each stage needs different fixes. The AI citation gap finder shows which stage you are at for any question.
From missing to retrieved
- Allow AI search bots. OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot must be allowed in robots.txt. Check with the AI crawler checker.
- Use the question's words. Put the core wording of the question in your title, H1 and opening paragraph.
- Render content in HTML. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so text loaded only by scripts may be invisible.
- Build relevance. Internal links from related pages and mentions from relevant external sites help pages rank for the question.
From retrieved to cited
- Lead with a direct answer of 40 to 60 words that starts with the subject.
- Answer follow-up questions under question headings; AI answers often combine several sub-questions.
- Add specifics: numbers, prices, dates and named examples that competitors lack.
- Add FAQPage or HowTo schema matching the visible content.
- Show trust: author, updated date and links to authoritative sources.
- Close the content gap: cover the subtopics the cited pages cover.
From cited to cited first
- Offer something unique: original data, a comparison table, a calculator or first-hand experience.
- Stay fresh: update facts and the visible date when things change.
- Earn independent mentions on the domains the AI cites alongside you: directories, review sites, publications and communities.
What not to do
- Do not stuff questions or keywords without answering them.
- Do not add FAQ schema for questions that are not visible on the page.
- Do not change dates without changing content.
- Do not block AI search bots while trying to block training crawlers; they use different user agents.
How to track progress
Choose 5 to 10 questions that matter to your business. Check each monthly with the same competitors in the AEO score checker and record your AEO score, whether you were retrieved or cited, and your position among cited sources. Moving from missing to retrieved to cited across several questions is the clearest sign your AEO work is paying off.
