Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so answer engines can extract it and present it as a direct answer, with your page credited as the source. Answer engines include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa.
Why AEO matters now
Search used to end with a list of ten links. More and more searches now end with an answer: a summary at the top of Google, a chat response in ChatGPT or a spoken reply from a voice assistant. These answers usually draw on only a few sources. If your page is one of them, you gain visibility and trust even when the user does not click. If it is not, a competitor takes that position.
AEO is how you become one of those sources. It does not replace SEO; answer engines still find pages through search indexes. AEO adds the structure that makes your content easy to extract, quote and trust.
How answer engines choose sources
- Understand the question. The engine identifies what is being asked and may split complex questions into several sub-questions.
- Retrieve candidates. It searches its index for pages that match each question.
- Select passages. It looks for short, self-contained passages that answer the question directly.
- Check trust. It favours sources that are clear about who they are, specific, current and confirmed by other sites.
- Compose and cite. It writes the answer and credits the pages it used.
Every step suggests something you can improve: be retrievable, answer directly, be specific and be trustworthy.
AEO vs SEO in one table
| Aspect | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list of links | Be the extracted, cited answer |
| Unit that wins | The whole page | A passage of 40 to 60 words |
| Key signals | Relevance, links, technical health | Direct answers, question headings, schema, facts, trust |
| Success metric | Position and clicks | Citations and mentions in answers |

The five core principles of AEO
1. Answer first
Put a direct 40 to 60 word answer to the main question at the top of the page, then expand. Start with the subject ("Solar panels cost…") so the sentence makes sense when quoted on its own.
2. Mirror real questions
Use the exact questions people ask as H2 and H3 headings, and answer each immediately below. This matches how engines break a topic into sub-questions.
3. Make structure explicit
Use lists for steps, tables for comparisons and FAQPage schema for question and answer content. Explicit structure is easier to extract than narrative paragraphs.
4. Be specific
Numbers, prices, dates, measurements and named examples make a passage more useful than a general statement, and easier to verify.
5. Show trust
Show who wrote the page, when it was updated and which sources support it, and let AI search crawlers access it.
How to measure AEO
An AEO score summarises how ready a page is for answer engines. Our AEO score checker measures 22 factors across answer readiness, structured data, content quality and trust and access, then compares your page with the pages that live search returns for your question. Because the real outcome is being cited, it also runs a live citation test and shows who AI cites instead of you.
Beyond the score, track featured snippets and AI Overview impressions in Google Search Console, referral visits from AI platforms in your analytics, and AI crawler requests in your server logs.
How to get started with AEO
- List the 10 to 20 questions your customers ask most.
- Map each question to the page that should answer it.
- Run each page through the AEO checker with its target question.
- Apply the fixes, starting with the direct answer and question headings.
- Re-check monthly and track whether you move from missing to retrieved to cited.
